Reading the Costa Rican Seasons
Green season, dry season, and the two shoulder windows that quietly deliver the best light, the emptiest beaches and the strongest fishing.
Costa Rica does not really have four seasons. It has two, plus two narrow windows that experienced travellers quietly protect.
December through April is the dry season: reliable sun, busy villas, the highest rates and the strongest sailfish bite out of Los Sueños. May through November is the green season, when afternoon rain arrives on schedule, the rivers rise for rafting, the forest turns loud, and villa rates soften considerably.
The windows worth knowing are late April to mid-May and late November to early December. The landscape has either just greened or not yet dried out, flights are cheaper, the beaches are close to empty, and the light photographs beautifully all day.
